Juvenile delinquency, listed among the world's three pubic hazards along with environmental pollution, drug trafficking and drug abuse, is attracting great attention from nations all over the world. Besides doing harm to the criminals themselves, their families and social surroundings, juvenile crimes have much negative impact on future society. It has become the common responsibility of the whole society to prevent and reduce juvenile crimes. Research on the countermeasures against juvenile delinquency benefits both the present and the future generations. This thesis, taking the example of the juvenile crimes in Shandong Province, discuses the causes and prevention of juvenile delinquency and proposes many suggestions with the hope of inspiring more people to participate in the work of preventing and reducing juvenile crimes. This paper first gives a legal definition for juvenile delinquency, and then presents an introduction to the major problems to be solved in the paper, main theories and methods adopted, and the fundamental ideas and fame of the paper. In the second part, the author reviews the theoretical study in this field both at home and abroad. In the third part, the author, based on a thorough investigation and research, analyzes the characteristics and types of juvenile delinquency in Shandong Province. The characteristics of juvenile crimes in Shandong Province can be summarized as follows: ...the criminal subjects are ignorant, uneducated and their ages tend to be younger, their motives are usually simple, unexpected and blind, the criminal means are increasingly brutal and intelligent, and cross-infection between peer groups has become a typical feature. Instead of being limited to a single or several types, juvenile crimes are diverse, complicated and overlapping. In view of social influence and frequency, the several major types which the society should pay most attention to are intentional injury, theft, pruriency, and drug abuse. In the forth part, the author explores the causes and countermeasures of juvenile delinquency. The first cause lies in the physiological and psychological features of juveniles. In adolescence, juveniles are undergoing changes in both physiology and psychology; notable changes can be detected in their cognitive ability, emotion and will power. Family education serves as the foundation for the growth of minors. Family is losing its stability, parents are losing their authority, parent child education is being neglected, and parent's morality is worsening. All these are the key factors behind juvenile crimes. Schools play a vital role in the socialization of minors, and good school education can compensate for and rectify the adverse effects of family education. Unfortunately our school education still has many defects, such as neglect of ideological and moral education, undue emphasis being laid on the rate of admission into higher schools which exacerbates the polarization among students, ineffective legal education, laggard adolescent sex education and mental health education, all of which are unfavorable to the socialization of minors. In addition, due to the lack of a correct outlook on life and the world and insufficient social experience, juveniles are still unable to distinguish right from wrong. Therefore, the corruption and malpractices existing in our society can have serious negative influence on juveniles. After analyzing the causes of juvenile delinquency in detail, the author puts forward some countermeasures. The author holds families, schools and communities should collaborate to prevent and reduce juvenile crimes from the source.Document method, investigating and analyzing method, and quantitative analysis are adopted in this thesis.
