The modern transition of the tributary relationship between China and Vietnam is an important topic in the research field of the bilateral relational history between China-Vietnam. It is of important academic value and realistic significance. It can open up a new perspective on the research of modern China-Vietnam relationship, and plays a heuristic role in studying the tributary systems and the modernization of late Qing Dynasty. In reality, the foreign relationship with neighboring countries occupies very important position in our diplomatic strategy. Currently, neighboring countries are accustomed to look on the rise of China and alert to the rise of China, which will affect China's revitalization. Thus it is extremely important to clear the historical truth.Basing on the previous study about this topic, this thesis adopts a new perspective of"One Diplomacy Two Systems"to approach the modern transition of China-Vietnam tributary relation, with the combination of historical documents and argumentation, and the alternative use of induction and deduction. This thesis first discusses the establishment of China-Vietnam tributary relationship. For the reason of invasion from western countries, Qing government was forced to adjust the foreign relationship and receive the diplomatic principles of western countries and integrate the international systems of modern capitalism. The invasion of Vietnam from France gradually reduced Vietnam to a colony and promoted the gradual formation of France-Vietnam treaty relationship, but on the other hand the tributary relation between China and Vietnam was still to be remained. Thus, in the field of China-Vietnam foreign relationship, there was the co-existence of tributary relationship and modern treaty relationship, which is the so-called"One Diplomacy Two Systems". This is actually a particular historical phenomenon in the transition of modern China-Vietnam relations. The signing of China-France Vietnam Treaty in 1885 declared the end of tributary relationship between China and Vietnam. However, this tributary system between China-Vietnam brought a far-fetching effect on the tributary culture and tributary psychology. This point just expresses the long-termed and arduous property of China-Vietnam transition.
