Afghanistan's south-west Asia is a small land-locked countryDue to its unique geographical location, becomes the battlefield for big powers fighting for their benefits and ambitions. A country hardly noticeable on the map has become the focus of the world since 1970s and 1980s; a regional issue has become a significant topic in international relations. The topic, however, has nothing to do with peace, development and harmony, but is full of brutehood, cruelty, blood and killing. That is what the U.S.S.R's Invasion of Afghanistan, a notorious event in international relation history, is all about. Why is it that Afghanistan should become the source of war? Why does the country become the focus of international relations? In which aspects has it influenced the contemporary international relationship? These are the main topics which this thesis explores. As an Afghan who has experienced the war and has joined the battle to protect his motherland himself, the author feels obliged to record and research the history of this period, with the hope of contributing my own part in putting an end to the civil war, rebuilding our motherland and in Afghanistan's better involvement in the international family. The thesis also puts forward the issue of "Living Space" of Afghanistan and explores how to win independent development space in complicated and capricious international relations. As to the handling of complicated and capricious international relations, the author holds that, besides political stability and economic development, we should handle the relations with big powers and other neighbouring countries skillfully. The principles and specific strategies which should be followed in handling international relations are also put forward in the thesis. The author insists that the world affairs should be managed by people of all nations, not monopolized by few big powers. This is beneficial for people from all nations to seek mutual cooperation on an equal footing, and to resolve international disputes through negotiation and consultation. In a multiploar world, every nation, big or small, has the equal right to be involved in the resolution of international affairs, which is conductive to the promotion of a new rule of international relations, to the reformation of the old international economic and political system, and to the progress and prosperity of the whole world and humankind.
