Research On The Reason Of The Nation-Separation Movements In The East Of Indonesia Archipelago During Post-Suharto Period

After Suharto fell out of power, the nation-separation movements broke out again in Indonesia. This dissertation focuses on Maluku, East Timor and Irian Jaya in the east of Indonesia archipelago and tries to sum up the reason of the nation-separation movements occurring in this area during post-Suharto period. Analyzing the history and reality of eastern Indonesia archipelago, this dissertation makes a conclusion that the historical factors and the wrong governance as well as unique political environment caused the nation-separation movements during post-Suharto period.The first chapter introduces the origin of the research and the outline of the dissertation. It also makes a review of related academic researches.The second chapter introduces the status of the nation-separation movements in the east of Indonesia archipelago in order to bring in related discuss in the following chapters.The third chapter reviews the nation-separation movements from the time Indonesia obtained independence to Suharto period, and then analyzes the historical background or the origin of the nation-separation movements during post-Suharto period.The fourth chapter discusses how the injustice of economic interest distribution between Java and outer islands in Suharto period affected the relation between the central government and the outer islands and thinks it is the main and direct reason of the nation-separation movements occurring in the east of Indonesia archipelago during post-Suharto period. Besides, it analyzes the cultural factors behind the economy.The fifth chapter is the main part of this dissertation. It discusses the unique political environment during post-Suharto period and draws the conclusion that both the historical factors and the wrong governance caused the nation-separation movements during post-Suharto period.The last part makes a conclusion by comparative study. It compares the east of Indonesia with the west of Indonesia, Aceh with the east of Indonesia. It also makes a comparison among Maluku, East Timor and Irian Jaya. By comparison, this dissertation generalizes the similarities and differences among the reasons of the nation-separation movements in different regions of Indonesia and shows the uniqueness of the reason.
