This article is based on the Mill's living background,through the contemporary Tocqueville's comparison,reveals Mill different exploring approach about the liberal dilemma in the democratic era.Though Mill and Tocqueville,faced the same freedom problems of the democratic era,the two men embarked on a different card into the path search.Mill also said frankly that he had been affected by Tocqueville.Both the two thinker had superior understanding about democracy and the issue of freedom,the biggest difference between them is not the different concept of democracy, but that they eventually seek a different way.Tocqueville ultimately resorted to the traditional,yet Mill more is to create alternative way.In this paper,the first and the second chapter are to resolve what problems Mill theory of social liberty is to resolve? What the contents of the social liberty? This is also the focus of this paper,and an attempt to read Mill from the horizontal.Then,the third,forth chapters are longitudinal analysis on Mill theory of social liberty,namely,what the difference between the theoretical basis of Mill theory of social liberty and that of the theory of classical liberalism? How does the prominent contribution of Mill to resolve the liberal dilemma manifest.The author in ChapterⅤ,mainly through interpret several controversial points of the theory of social liberty in academic circles,to make some clarification and defense.Trying to revert to the era of Living Mill has always been the basic starting point of the author of this article to understand such problem.ChapterⅥis on the China's concern of Mill theory of social liberty, the author in this section will be to explore the practical significance of Mill theory.Mill's way out is his so called the theory of social liberty.He said the biggest danger the people facing were no longer the authoritarian at the government level,but the oppressive society,people had been from the pursuit for political freedom of political and legal sense to pursue social liberty.The author thinks this is the core of the ideological and theoretical content of Mill,and also Mill's greatest contribution on the development of the history of liberalism's.This article intends to adopt historical research methods,also draws on Gerald·Maccallum's three-dimensional analysis method.In addition,This article also intends to adopt the comparative research methods,after necessary classification and induction,in the hope that make my own interpretation on the idea of Mill.
