As a multi-ethnic and multi-island country, Indonesia has a serious situation in domestic ethnic separatist for some reasons, such as her historical and national policies. This paper describes the emergence, process and future prospects of the separatist ethnic in Maluku and Papua in Indonesia, and studies the causes. The importance of appropriate measures on the two regional issues taken by the Indonesian government is stressed in this paper.The introduction tells the significance of this paper as well as its theoretical framework and methodology, and then defines some terms applied in this paper.Chapter II introduces in the Indonesian history, geography, economic, political profile and the emergence and process of ethnic separatist movements in Maluku and Papua.As a main part of this paper, this chapter analysis the reasons for separatist movements. Section I shows ethnic conflicts following the escalation of regional conflicts which is caused by regional economic imbalance; Section II focus on the differences in national religious, history and culture; Section III is about the impact of international politics; Section IV divert to Indonesian domestic policies; Section V analysis the domestic immigration policy and its serious consequences.Chapter IV is about the similarities, differences and substantive of movements, including two parts: section I compares causes between Maluku and Papua; Section IIcares for the substantive of the movement.Chapter V is about the trend and countermeasures on the movements. Ending part sums up the main points of the whole paper.
