The defense policy of one country has a close relationship with its foreign policy. The post Australian defense policy has experienced the "forward defense" during 1950s and 1960s to the "continental defense" during 1970s and 1980s, and then the overseas attack in the new century. It has reflected the change of the defense target, from Japan to communism and then the non-traditional security. The white paper defense 2000 has laid a basis for the Australian defense policy in the first 10 years in the new century which is on the basis of the Australia and America union, keeping a balance in the areas and the peace of the conflicting areas. The defense policy in the new century pays more attention to the non-traditional security factors and the relationship with America to create a multilateral safety belt.The passage consists of three parts: introduction, text and conclusion. The introduction is mainly about the background and significance of the Australian defense policy and its current research situation and method. The text is divided into four parts. The first is the history of the Australian defense policy, which expounds the development process of it. The second part expounds the practical and academic foundation. The practical foundation is further divided into internal and overseas factors and the academic one is about the cooperation and intersection theory, etc. The third part expounds the main characters of Australian defense policy which emphasize the continental defense and the contribution to neighborhood countries. It also claims to take part in the multinational operation and increase invest to defense to promote the military escalation and to strengthen the national defense industry, non-traditional security and multilateral cooperation strategy, etc. the fourth part expounds its influence to China, political and economic aspects. The conclusion wholly expounds the situation of Australian defense policy and an outlook to its influence to China.
