Martial arts are an indispensible part of Chinese culture as well as a direct reflection of Chinese philosophy of life, worldview and values. While being a cultural form of physical game and promotion of body functions, they are rooted in Chinese traditional social experience and spiritual life and reflect national characteristics and ideology. From their birth, martial arts have inevitably been part of Chinese culture. When tracing back along their development, we can see clearly the countless ties between martial arts and philosophy of life, a particular expression of Chinese philosophy.Based on philosophy of life, this thesis is to discuss the origin of martial arts and their routines. Research in it consists of both general one, namely on what influence philosophy of life exerted on the formation of martial arts as well as how typical schools of martial arts contribute to the realization of philosophy of life, and longitudinal one which analyses the role of philosophy of life in promoting martial arts'contemporary value and clarifying the significance of contemporary transmission of martial arts. Besides, the thesis tries to reveal Chinese pursuit and life experiences conveyed through martial arts, and rethink their connections with construction of contemporary human spirit. The author tries to conduct his innovative research on the basis of case study of typical schools of martial arts. Through deeply exploring martial arts' philosophical meaning and revealing their original significance, the profound cultural value of martial arts can be clarified untechnically, which provides an important way to us to understand both interior and exterior beauty of martial arts. Besides, this thesis aims to enrich people's understanding of this Chinese traditional art and then strengthen their sense of identity and closeness. Meanwhile, the author hopes that, this research would provide a brand new way in exploring martial arts'contemporary transmission and interpretation.
