Whether English grammar should be taught and how it should be taught in senior high middle school is the main topic in English teaching. After the new curriculum reform, grammar teaching in junior and senior high middle schools is considered less important than ever before. High school English curriculum standards point out clearly that"the whole aim of the new standards is to make students be clear of the aim of learning English, and to develop their autonomous learning and cooperative learning ability based on the compulsory education. These standards also aim to form students effective learning strategies and comprehensive language skills. Language knowledge includes phonetics, vocabulary, grammar, functions and topics of knowledge." Thus, grammar teaching is the essential content in high school English teaching, and only mastering the grammar students can understand foreign language better and use foreign language appropriately. Grammar teaching is a means to improve students' practical abilities of using language, and teaching language knowledge is not the ultimate goal of teaching. So we should always try to advocate students to explore autonomous learning method. In teaching process, we should create good language environment for students and make them feel the existence of language rules. Meanwhile, we should also actively encourage them to use the language knowledge to complete some concrete tasks to achieve the final goal of using the language rules properly.Currently in high school English grammar teaching, there are some problems: some teachers are so focused on grammar that they think learning grammatical rules is the most important thing when learn a foreign language; other teachers don't pay close attention to grammar, and they think grammar is dispensable, so in the process of English teaching grammar teaching is ignored. These two kinds of grammar teaching ideas are too extreme; they do not recognize grammar teaching status clearly.Based on this, an experiment is carried out on the experimental class and control class to test the communicative approach of teaching grammar and traditional grammar teaching. The experimental class and control class were pre-tested and post-tested. During the three-month experiment, the traditional grammar-translation method is applied in the control classes while communicative teaching is applied in the experimental class. The results of the experiment show that communicative approach can be applied to grammar teaching, and is more suitable for grammar teaching than traditional translation method. It can improve students'learning interest and enhance the communication skills. The article also discusses results of two teaching methods in the classroom and draws some suggestions for grammar teaching for senior high school teachers.
