With the development of economy and globalization, English becomes more and more popular and significant in China, and it is imperative to develop learners'English communicative competence.English is a foreign language for Chinese people and there is a lack of environment to provide students with enough English input and the opportunity to use English in China, unlike that in the country where English is the mother tongue or second language. The students in China study English by learning not by acquisition; therefore the study of grammar becomes a necessary part for Chinese language learners to achieve communicative competence.However, the traditional grammar teaching methods are far from the requirement of the present situation. With the introduction of Communicative Language Teaching in the late 1970s, many Chinese experts began to try applying Communicative Language Teaching in grammar teaching, which has provided some theoretical and practical foundation.But do the teachers in China really apply Communicative Language Teaching to grammar teaching? How do they apply Communicative Language Teaching to grammar teaching? What are the problems the teachers confront in the process of this application? What're the advantages and disadvantages about communicative grammar teaching? This paper is intended to make an investigation of the application of Communicative Language Teaching to grammar teaching, taking the teachers and students in Xinhua Middle School, No.1 Middle School, Tianjin Experimental School, and The Attached High School to Nankai University, the Attached High School to Tianjin University, Yuhong Middle School and No.25 Middle School in Tianjin as the subjects. Questionnaires, classroom observation and interview are adopted to collect the data. From this investigation, the current situation about grammar learning and teaching and the application of Communicative Language Teaching to grammar teaching are found, and then the author discusses the problems teachers confront in communicative grammar teaching from the aspects of evaluation system, teaching conditions, teachers and students and comes up with some feasible advice. It is sincerely expected that this thesis can give some introspection to teachers to teach grammar, and find an appropriate way for Chinese students to learn grammar, and can build an effective way for researchers on communicative grammar teaching.
