With the development of linguistics, psychology and pedagogy, people are taking a new look at foreign language teaching, and grammar is also endowed with a new meaning, which reflects a new linguistic conception. This new conception regards language not merely as a system of rules, but as a tool for human communication. And accordingly, the traditional methods of grammar teaching should be reformed.Based on Communicative Language Teaching(CLT), In-put theory and Cognitive theory, this thesis not only analyzes the features, principles, advantages and disadvantages of CLT, but also probes into incompatibility and feasibility in carrying out CLT in China. At the same time, it introduces strategies of grammar teaching in the framework of CLT as well as present situation of grammar teaching in the framework of CLT at home and abroad. An experiment was conducted to test whether grammar teaching in the framework of CLT is adaptable to senior middle school students, and whether teaching grammar in this way is more effective than teaching grammar in a traditional way.The pre-and post-tests were conducted with both the experimental class and the control class. One grammatical item——the Passive Voice was chosen for the experiment. The experimental class was taught in the framework of CLT, while the control class was treated with the traditional method. The experimental result showed that grammar teaching in the framework of CLT is better than in a traditional way. What we learnt from the experiment is that grammar teaching should be meaningful input and it should not be restricted to memorizing the form. Instead, grammar should be taught in contexts combined with its function and meaning. Of course, like any other researches conducted in this field, the present experiment has its own limitations, which must be taken into consideration in interpreting, generalizing and even hopefully, applying the results. Though the author of the thesis advocates teaching grammar in the framework of CLT, we don't mean to completely replace the traditional ways in grammar teaching, but to make an effort to explore an effective way to teach grammar. Teachers should adopt a suitable way to teach, considering their students and teaching situations.
