Teaching material is the important component of English Curriculum Implementation. To select and use suitable teaching material is the important prerequisite for accomplishing teaching content and achieving teaching goals. Teaching material is one of the important factors to truly put teaching program into effect; for teachers, the main base of organizing teaching activities; for students, also the principal source of obtaining related knowledge, skills and learning strategies. With the implementation of The Outline of Curriculum Reform in Elementary Education and the development of foreign language teaching, more and more foreign teaching materials have been poured into the market. Facing diversified teaching materials, obviously, it is very important to study the teaching materials. Not only dose the study of the teaching materials provide reference to choose teaching materials for educational administrative department, but also it could provide suggestions to improve teaching materials for compiling department. Especially, it is helpful for teachers to decide what materials to leave out and what to leave in so that they could appropriately help their students have a better study.The essay compares the NSE with NSEC teaching materials, both of which are much more representative textbooks of senior middle school in Shandong province, searching for the general characteristics and the differences, the advantages and shortcomings between them in order to learn from each other. Through the investigation and study about the situation of using those two teaching materials, it analyzes whether the teaching materials could meet the demand of the students and teachers, realize the effective results and problems in the using course to find out the deviation occurred in textbooks'design and performance, make attribution analysis and put forward effective suggestions of using teaching materials.This essay is divided into five parts:The first part is an introduction which expounds the research problems and previous documents. It also elaborates in the evaluation theory of English teaching materials at home and abroad, evaluating standards and the overview of comparative study in English teaching materials. The logic thinking and means offer theoretical background and frame of the research. The second part is the textual analysis of two senior high English textbooks between NSE and NSEC. This part makes a profound inquiry into the two textbooks from three respects which are regulation, content and cultural guide. At the same time, the writer elaborates the content from seven aspects which contains forms of literature, subject matter, vocabulary and word frequency, the presentation sequence of pronunciation, syntactical design, the design of question types in reading comprehension and the layout of unit exercises. Eventually, based on the comparison, the general characters and differences between the two textbooks are summarized and evaluated.The third part: Investigation into the current situation and results analysis of the two English teaching materials. An experiment using textbooks has been made in this part. Through many methods such as Questionnaire method and Interview, the application situation can be fully reacted and analyzed in all dimensions and it can also offer abundant resources for problems presentation.The fourth part focuses on the advantages and shortcomings between NSE and NSEC. According to the investigation of the textual investigation and their using situation, the essay clears their virtues and shortcomings of the two textbooks, analyzes problems existing in the process of using teaching materials, and finds the breakthrough point of problem solving. The fifth part: thinking and suggestion. This part illustrates some consideration and enlightenment acquired from the study. As an English teacher, the writer has used NSE for many years. The writer provides some suggestions for the editors, teachers and students to use the teaching materials better. The writer hopes that this study could offer some beneficial help for teachers'daily teaching and the students'use of teaching materials.
