Reading is one of the main sources of Language input. It offers a number of practical advantages in L2 learning in China. Reading comprehension tests take up the largest proportion in English exam for the entrance of senior high school. So teaching English reading has long been viewed as one of the most important parts of English teaching and always occupy a prominent position in junior high school English teaching and learning. English teachers are trying their best to improve their teaching methods in reading class. However, compared with the high requirements for middle school students, the students'reading competence is unsatisfactory.The traditional teaching method applied by many junior high school English teachers overlooks instruction of coherence of the text. Students can not read a text as a whole or find the relationship between linguistic forms in the context let alone appreciate the beauty of the coherence.During the past decade, theories and practices about teaching English reading had seen dramatic improvements and text analysis teaching approach is one of the most important English reading teaching approaches. And cohesion theory achieved both through grammar and vocabulary is one of the most significant theories of text analysis. It contributes a great deal to reading comprehension.This paper is an action research of cohesion theory used in English reading in junior high school. After making a detailed introduction of the theoretical background, relevant terms and the two types of cohesion theory, the researcher describes the process of using grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion in junior high school reading teaching. A 4-month experiment has been conducted to find out the effects of cohesion theory applied in junior high school reading teaching. Then the researcher reaches the conclusion that cohesion theory can be used to guide junior high school reading teaching and it can help improve the students'reading comprehension ability effectively.
