With the continuous development of Chinese economy and the cultural exchange between China and the rest of the world, the society is in explosive need of English language talents. We have unanimously realized the importance of oral English. Oral English is regarded as the most effective way for language learners to realize cross-cultural communication and the key criterion for one's overall language capability. To our disappointment, however, our country's senior high school students'oral competence has always been a target for social criticism. When in oral English exchange, many senior high students are no more than dummies. The non-intellective factors are the focus of the study among the many elements which might influence oral competence of the senior high students. Through various methods including questionnaire, testing and interview, this research is to examine the correlation between non-intellective factors (motivation, interest, emotion and persistence) and the competence of the senior high school students'oral English from a senior high teacher's perspective. The study results are expected to be employed to help teachers to improve their teaching. The thesis is comprised of four chapters as follow:The first chapter briefly introduces the background of the thesis and analyzes the aims and significance of the study. The second chapter starts by reviewing literature on non-intellective factors abroad and at home, including the progress in different countries, the research results of some domestic experts in the area, the arguments on the definitions of non-intellective factors, their structures and functions, etc.The third chapter concentrates on the study of the 180 students randomly selected from the three senior grades from Jiu Long Model Middle School and the 24 senior English teachers from 3 senior schools of different levels. Questionnaires are conducted on the students and teachers. Students'oral grades are collected, data analysis and student interview are performed. Based on the study statistics and factual information obtained, the positive correlation between non-intellective factors and the oral English is proved. The fourth chapter is the conclusion of the research results which are followed by the objective analysis on the shortcomings of the study. After the significance of non-intellective factors on the oral English teaching is revealed to the teachers, suggestions are provided for the teachers to foster positive non-intellective factors. Teachers are encouraged to clarify the true motive of learning English, to arouse students'interest, to activate students'positive emotion and to foster students'learning persistence.
