This article consists of six chapters. Chapter one talks about the current situation on teaching English reading in junior high school. It infers that at present most teachers focus their teaching on knowledge acquisition rather than improving students' comprehensive language competence and cultivating students'good reading habits. This article conducts its research by doing teaching experiments, doing questionnaire survey, interviewing students and teachers. The research aims on finding ways to improve teaching. Chapter two introduces the advantages of small class teaching. Chapter three analyses some typical cases of reading teaching to discover some problems in reading teaching and proposes the relevant solutions. Chapter four introduces how the teaching experiments are carried out. It consists of two parts:how to teach reading in class and how to help students'reading after class. Chapter five expatiates the experiment of reading teaching and makes analysis and comparisons of students'reading abilities and reading habits before and after the experiment. It tries to support the changes taking place after the experiment. In Chapter six the author indicates that there are both strengths and weakness in this study and expresses her sincere wishes to exchange with experts and teachers for further improvements.
