Reading is one of the most important and essential skills in learning English. It is also a main way of acquiring knowledge as well as communication. In addition, reading is a necessary part of various tests and exams in China, especially in the college entrance examination, where the part of reading comprehension makes up nearly half of the score. Therefore, how to improve students'reading ability is one of the primary aims of English teaching. However, reading is a very complex process both mentally and psychologically. Although students spend a large amount of time on it, the result is still not satisfactory, which causes great challenge to the English teacher in high school. The traditional method has predominated in the field of English reading teaching, whose drawbacks have been discovered in recent years.With the development of the teaching theory and practice, people are exploring new methods of English reading teaching. Cooperative learning as a new teaching theory has become one of the most popular ways of teaching. Therefore, if cooperative learning can be applied to English reading teaching appropriately, the result will be greatly rewarding. This thesis first expounds the theory of cooperative learning and English reading teaching, on the basis of which, a research is carried out to demonstrate whether cooperative learning can contribute to English reading teaching, especially in three aspects, namely improving students'reading ability, strengthening students'reading motivation; reducing students'reading anxiety. At last, according to the comparison between the grades before the experiment and those after the experiment as well as the analysis of the results of the questionnaires, it proves that cooperation learning can really improve students' reading ability, strengthen students'reading motivation and reduce students'reading anxiety.
