For a long time, reading teaching has been the important part in English teaching. It has also taken the unshakeable position in English study or the usage of English. With the diversification of education and the update of education concept, reading teaching has met a great chllenge, in which the old teaching mode could not satisfy the need of education. So it is important to modify the old modeles in reading teaching and find out new ones which are suitable for modern students and teachers. So the author brings up a new model of reading teaching, which is the cooperative teaching model.The paper is a research, in which the author investigated2common classes of95student studying in a primarys’ school which belongs to Grade6. In the survey, the author researched the students’reading level and marks, the students’interest of the reading before and after examination and the students’demand about reading teaching.Through the interview and questionnaire survey, the author found that without cooperative learning the students were not enough good. Also they were afraid of reading and they thought it difficult to promote reading ability. They felt the old teaching mode boring and wanted to try a new one. After the cooperative learning, most of the student’ reading ability was found promoted. Meaningwhile, they became more interested in reading and their reaction to cooperative learning was good. They thought cooperative learning not only could help them develop their friendship but also was good for the group cohesion. So, cooperative learning is fit for students of their age and suitable for reading teaching in primary school. Also it is fit for the characteristic of the times and the development of education. Therefore, cooperative learning has the value of further research. Specifically, this thesis is divided into six chapters:The first chapter, as a preface, includes the background, the purpose and the significance of cooperative learning as well as the structure of the thesis.The second chapter defines what the cooperative learning means, raises the theoretical foundations and reviews its research achievements at home and abroad.The third chapter explores and analyzes the problems existing in English teaching based on the investigations of the teachers, the students and the English classes.The fourth chapter presents the teaching design of the cooperative learning. It shows the feasibility of the cooperative learning by revealing the operation of the process.The fifth chapter proves the author’s viewpoints based on an experimental study. In the experiment class, the teacher adopted the cooperative learning while in the compared class the teacher still used the traditional teaching methods. After a term, we’ve got some useful conclusions.The sixth chapter is the reacquaints of the cooperative learning. The author has a better understanding of the cooperative learning after experiencing more teaching practice and reading more theories on the cooperative learning. It is the conclusion. It states the related results and the limitations of the experiment.
