BackgroundEarly in 1980s, the United States integrated more than 6000 researches and confirmed that:tobacco was harmful to health. Nowadays, Tobacco is still the single greatest preventable cause of death in the world. China is the biggest tobacco production and consumption country. Figures from the Ministry of Health show that China has an estimated 350 million smokers. Every year, about one million people die from the lung, heart, or other diseases caused by smoking. Smokers are not the only ones sickened and killed by tobacco. Second-hand smoke also has serious and often fatal health consequences. Now there are 540 million people suffered from second-hand smoking in China. Tobacco use has become one of the most serious public health problems in the world, yet plausibly preventable.By far, international behavior research on smoking had already turned from the whole smoker group into occasional smokers and daily smokers, divided by whether smoke everyday. And analyse different behavior characteristic.Saul Shiffman is one of the pioneer scientist doing study on smoking behavior and occasional smokers. He found occasional smokers can easily be influded by social situation, emotion and other factors. Occasional smokers seems have no close relationship with nicotine addiction, but also can cause passitive smoke harm to other people. Occasional smokers would also do harm to themselves. Many tobacco control experience showed that, the best tobacco control should be taken from non-smokers. In 5 years,30% occasional smokers would turn into daily smokers, and raise the dangerous of nicotine addiction. Daily smoker can hardly quit smoking, as well as tobacco control. In China, we have smoker report still remain in description epidemiology stage, using international research result, analyse Chinaese smokers by different smoking frequency, can help to find out social behavior patterns among Chinese occasional smokers, and target on special characteristic to create tobacco control strategy.ObjectivesBased on international theory and "China Tobacco Control Advocacy among Public Health Faculties", analyse the smoking status among chinese citizens, find the characteristic of social-behavior pattern in occasional smokers, compare the differences between occasional smoker and daily smoker on smoking abduction situation, addictive rate, quitting intent and so on. Target on the characteristic of social-behavior pattern in occasional smokers, attempt to raise pertinencetobacco control measure and quitting advice.MethodsAccording to the geography position and economic development status, randomly choose three cities located in the southeast, northwest, and southwest of China. Each city obtain 800-1000 questionnaires. The questionnaires mainly include:demographic characteristics, basic smoking situation, nicotine addiction, quitting behavior, smoking abduction situation and tobacco control propagandize model. Using sofeware Epidata 3.0 for data record, and SPSS 18.0 for Windows for data analyse. Analyse methods contain simple descriptive statical method, one-factor analysis and multiple factor logistic regression model.ResultsA total of 965 smokers were approached to participate in the study, and the smoking rate in all is 40.1%. Based on whether smoke everyday, divide all the smokers into two parts:occasional smoker and daily smoker, each part accounted for 12.6% and 27.5%. There are obvious differences between occasional smoker and daily smoker in education, smoking amout, smoking time, smoking site, ways pursue tobacco, nicotine addictive rate, quitting intent and passivite smoking attitude(P<0.05). Male smoker 904, as female smoker 61. Female smokers are mainly occasional smokers. Compared with male occasional smoker, female occasional smokers have longer smoking history, much more persistent tobacco consume behavior and higher nicotine addiction rate(P <0.05).Conclusion:The differents in social-behavior patterns between occasional smoker and daily smoker are obvious. There are many factors which impact on these smoking behaviors. Female smokers mainly are occasional smokers.
