Cooperative learning is regarded as one of the most efficient teaching strategies. Many researches have proved that cooperative learning is effective in improving both social skills and academic achievement.The dissertation presents a study to answer whether cooperative learning has a positive effect on the student's ability to read in English, here are the sub-questions: What are the effects of cooperative learning on the vocational senior high school students'interest in English reading? What are the effects of cooperative learning on promoting the vocational senior high school students'participation in English reading class? What are the effects of cooperative learning on the vocational senior high school students'English reading ability?The research tentatively proposes some English reading instructional methods based on Cooperative Learning theory in vocational senior high school. The whole experiment lasted four months. The experimental class received the cooperative method of learning while the control class was taught with the traditional method. The data collection includes the following techniques:questionnaires, interviews, and pre-test, post-test.The thesis consists of five chapters:Chapter 1 is the introductory part, which includes the background, significance and the structure of the cooperative learning, and then followed by literature review in chapter 2. This chapter serves as an overlook of previous studies from cooperative learning, reading and application of cooperative learning in English reading class. Chapter 3 serves as a description of the research methodology, which includes research questions, subjects, and research instruments, implementation of cooperative learning in English reading class in vocational senior high school. Data analysis and discussion are given in chapter 4. Chapter 5 is the description of the conclusions and limitation of this research. Implications for further research are also discussed in this section.The following is a summary of the main findings of the study:First of all, Cooperative Learning can increases students'interest in English leaning. Next, students in the experimental class are more motivated than those students in the control class. Cooperative learning can promote students'participation in English reading class. What's more, students begin to change their attitude towards English. At last and the most important, in contrast with the traditional teaching methods, cooperative learning methods proves to be more effective in improving students'reading ability.
