The rapid social development in China proposes a higher requirement for not only on the education system but also on the people who are considered to be useful in the society. Nowadays, the ultimate goal for the education in China is not longer about the knowledge itself but the way to get knowledge and the way to make people life-long learners who are capable of taking the responsibility of their own study.In the National English Curriculum Standards, there are requirements which are proposed as a response to the brand new need in the society. There are five goals in the National English Curriculum Standards, which are language knowledge, language skills, affect, language learning strategy and cultural awareness. By making language learning strategy one of these aims, the National English Curriculum Standards try to make students know the way to learn and be responsible to their own study as well. Language learning strategy which is the tools for active, self-directed involvement in English study could result in improved English proficiency and greater self-confidence. Therefore, it could be taken as one of the key elements for making students life-long learners.Besides, textbook which helps teachers organize the class and convey the knowledge to their students, also plays a crucial part in daily classroom teaching. The content of an English textbook is important to some degree in deciding the success of a class. Since language learning strategy is important for English study, it is necessary to be included in the English textbooks being used in class.This thesis carries out a textbook evaluation on the language learning strategy in the present textbooks New Senior English for China which are broadly used in senior middle schools in China.By carrying out both internal evaluation and external evaluation on the design of language learning strategy in this set of textbooks, this thesis tries to answer the following research questions.1) Does the textbook New Senior English for China meet the requirements of language learning strategy in the National English Curriculum Standards?2) Is the proposed effect on students'strategy training consistent with its actual effect?The subjects are the teachers and students chosen from three different senior middle schools. By conducting a questionnaire and semi-structured interview among these subjects, this thesis analyzes the data collected and gets the conclusion.
