With the rapid development of the science and network technology, educational informationization has already been the major part for national informationization. Moreover, the idea that combining information technology and teaching together, attracts more and more attentions, and the teaching style is constantly changed, as well as the learning environment is variational frequently. Therefore, taking information technology to assist teaching is an indispensable way. As an important tool for combining information technology and geography, GIS has the characteristics such as huge amount of information, strong expressive force, abundant functions, flexibility and practical applicability, and it has provided technology support and efficient platform for geography teaching informationization. Moreover, it is significant to construct a comprehensive, open and practical geography class.This paper has analyzed and illustrated on the GIS application in the field of practice teaching, employing the methods of comparison, user demand survey, case demonstration, and so on. As the existing studies on GIS assisted teaching, it shows that GIS has supported to be applied in the middle school teaching acting as an assisted teaching method, and it is also thought that the GIS application in the classroom can improve the teaching efficiency and develop students'comprehensive quality. However, there are few cases about applying GIS into practice teaching, for the reasons that lack of GIS teaching software which has simple & practical functions and lack of practice teaching cases for reference.Based on the application studies about GIS in the middle school teaching from domestic and overseas, this paper has stated the education function of GIS further, analyzed the necessity and effect by applying GIS into the teaching in middle school, and summarized the main application forms of GIS in the middle school. Moreover, this paper has conducted the demand analysis and functional design to GIS assisted software which is applied in middle school, and thought that the special software should have its own characteristics, such as simple interface, easy operation and strong pertinence, which are conducive to improve the efficiency of classroom teaching and independent learning of students. To illustrate sufficiently to the application methods of GIS, author has enumerated some GIS application examples which arc author personally used in classroom teaching in secondary schools. GIS assisted teaching can help students highlight their autonomy and exploratory, as well as combine geography teaching, inspiration of imagination and excitation of creativity together to make basic geography education reflect times'feature and education's innovation better.
