Research On Relationship Among The Narchissism Personality, Achievement Motivation And Self-handicapping Of Senior High School Students

In the modern achievement-oriented society, self-handicapping, one of self-worth protection strategies, has become a common behavior of students. In domestic, there are few researches on self-handicapping in relevant fields, especially in terms of personality variables. Based on the present researches, this study focuses on the senior high school students, aiming to investigate the relationship among narcissism, achievement motivation and self-handicapping so as to further reveal the interaction mechanism. By means of questionnaires, this study selected a random sample of 550 students from two senior high school in Fujian province. The results are as followed: (1) Senior high school students of different gender, school type and score show certain differences in self-handicapping. Specifically, female students show higher self-handicapping tendency; self-handicapping in students from a key school is higher than those from a secondary school; and the lower scores students get, the more they use the self-handicapping strategy. (2)There are significant differences in students of different grades in the aspect of narcissism. (3) There are significant differences in students of different school type, grade and score. (4) The overall narcissism and its fractal dimension are positively related with each dimension of achievement motivation. Self-handicapping is positively related with explicit narcissism and the motivation of avoiding failure, while negatively related with the motivation of succeeding. (5) Explicit narcissism, implicit narcissism, the motivation of succeeding, the motivation of avoiding failure and gender jointly predict the arousal of self-handicapping of senior high school students.
