Education not only teaches students to get knowledge, but also cultivates their abilities. This is an important content of quality education. As one of important contents of secondary education, mathematics education reminds us to research carefully and test concrete for ability. Only this, we can be clear on the students'actual mathematical abilities during the teaching practice.Then we can take effective teaching methods and teaching strategies to develop students'mathematical abilities in all directions. During the past years, the curriculum reforms of mathematics in all countries have continually strengthened the requirements of students'mathematical ability.Since "mathematical curriculum standards of high school (trial version)" issued in 2003,our nation has implemented the new curriculum reform in succession. There are both some achievements and some shortcomings. From 2009, the new curriculum reform of senior high school has been implemented in Hubei province. The implementation of new curriculum has been two years. How about the current level of senior high school students'mathematical ability?For this, this paper first study on the status of mathematical ability at home and abroad. Then it gives the definition of mathematical ability, the distinction between ability and skill, and studied the structure of mathematical ability theoretically. Second, it interprets the specific requirements of senior high school students'mathematical ability in "standard", especially curriculum concept and objectives. Then based on the theory, we exam practical mathematical ability of senior high school in Bubei, and investigate the status of high school teachers in teaching mathematical ability of senior students. Through the test, we get the following conclude:the level of mathematical ability is not high;the ability to calculate is worse than we thougt,and the ability to solve problems and the ability to create are generally poor.However,the ability to read and to application is better,and the ability to express and to communicate is not bad.Finally,this paper gives some strategies about how to cultivate the mathematical ability of high school students.
