Listening is the core of communicative activities. It is the basis for developing other language skills. Good English listening comprehension is the premise and foundation for learning English. Traditional English teaching emphasis on language knowledge imparting, ignores the students' language skills training and communication ability. Due to the negative effects, English listening in secondary vocational school has not been given sufficient attention, which is seriously impacting the progress of English teaching. Through the teaching practice in secondary vocational school in Xi'an. the author found that the listening teaching is mostly still in the traditional mode and gained little effect.According to the data from China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). empirical researches of communicative and task-based approaches are mostly concentrating on English reading and writing, and listening teaching researches are mostly concentrating on the teaching in high schools and colleges, research on English listening teaching in secondary vocational schools based on communicative and task-based approaches is almost empty. Therefore research on English listening teaching in secondary vocational schools based on communicative and task-based approaches is very important and necessary.This thesis based on a combination of communicative and task-based approaches applies to the listening teaching experiment. By comparing and analyzing the test results from different classes, this research will be beneficial to future study on improving English listening teaching level and students'listening level which has great significance.This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 briefly introduces the background and the significance of this research including the situations and the main problems existing in of English listening teaching in secondary vocational schools. Chapter 2 expounds the theoretical basis of communicative teaching approach and task-based teaching approach, including the convergences and differences of two approaches. Chapter 3 displays in full view an empirical study of communicative and task-based teaching approaches in English listening class in secondary vocational school, experiment is carried out within sixteen weeks mainly with the instruments:pre-test, post-test and questionnaire. The author gives the experimental class the communicative language teaching and task-based language teaching, while the control class receives the traditional teaching model. Chapter 4 is the results and discussion, based on the results of statistics, the author mainly analyses pre-test, post-test and questionnaires, the results indicate that the implementation of communicative and task-based teaching approaches can effectively develop the subjects'listening competence and improve their interests on learning listening. The thesis concludes in Chapter 5, implications, limitations and suggestions for future research will be discussed here.
