Homosexuality and the development of the society are closely associated with each other. As a basic pattern of human behavior in history, homosexuality has ever occupied a high position in some cultural groups. In ancient Greece, homosexuality was once regarded as a branch of "higher education", while in China's Northern and Southern, the Dynasties period also advocated "Manhood (nanfeng)" in Fujian and other places. However, homosexuality suffers persecution after the glorious Greek civilization due to the opposition of Christianity in the Middle Ages in Europe, while in China, Confucianism also considers it goes against the traditional ethics, which makes homosexuality into survival predicament. On the other hand, the public consider that homosexuality is a disease due to lack of understanding of homosexuality, at the same time, homosexuals are a high risk of AIDS, which further deepens the social discrimination and prejudice. With the progress of social civilization, especially the American gay liberation movements, "gay marriage" has been legalized in some western countries. In June 27,2010, Iceland enacted laws recognizing gay legal. The same day, Iceland Prime Minister Johanna·West married her same-sex lover to become the first national leader who declared homosexual identity openly, what marks the "gay marriage" legalization will draw more national reaction and attention. This thesis analyzes the causes of homosexuality from inborn theory, Freud's psychological theory and queer theory, and compares the phenomenon of homosexuality between China and the West from the historical and ethical perspectives. We should know homosexuality is a normal sexual orientation as well as heterosexuality; so it is necessary for us to change our traditional concepts, eliminate prejudice and respect their sexual orientation, to promote social harmony and stability together. The thesis is divided into six parts.Chapter one makes a brief introduction of homosexuality, and introduces the research of homosexuality domestic and abroad, and the relationship between homosexuality and culture.Chapter two focuses on gay theory, which analyzes the causes of homosexuality from inborn theory and so on, and proves homosexuality is a different sexual orientation from a scientific point of view.Chapter three makes a comparative analysis of homosexuality in China and the West from the historical perspective. There are a lot of written records about homosexuality in the history of China and the West; many of the best literary works are also involved with the theme of homosexuality. From the Greek civilization in the west to the Northern and Southern dynasties "Manhood (nanfeng)" in China, homosexuality once experienced a glorious period of history both in China and the West. Compared to the persecution of homosexuals in Middle Ages in Europe, homosexuality developed in a relatively relaxed environment in China.Chapter four makes a comparative analysis of homosexuality from the ethical point of view. This chapter further illustrates the influence of ethics on human society, and describes Christian oppression towards homosexuality and the Bible's attitude towards homosexuality; the influences of Confucian "family lineage" and the Taoist "yin-yang balance" on homosexuals, which make them suffer pain and a long-term prejudice.Chapter five focuses on the current status of homosexuality and future trends. We should appeal to society to give more attention to homosexuality, and a correct understanding of homosexuality, so that the rights of the vulnerable groups can be protected.Chapter six is the conclusion. Through the discussion of relevant historical period, it shows that the influences of the traditional religion and ethic on homosexuality are the main causes of discrimination against homosexuals, which points out the motive and the significance of the thesis. We should respect the rights of homosexuals, and create a harmonious society together.
