With the development of information society, English becomes more and more important. Reading is regarded as an important channel for learning English. It's necessary for us to improve English reading teaching and cultivate students'reading ability. However, the influence of the traditional pedagogy is so great that our students are lacking in schema and encounter many obstacles in reading. With reference to the schemata theory, this thesis mainly explores a new reading teaching method based on schemata. The thesis is intended to improve the traditional method of teaching reading by adopting effective teaching methods to develop in students the ability to use appropriate reading strategies and grasp the skills of reading comprehension. The thesis consists of seven chapters: Chapter one is an introduction which describes the background, significance and problems. Chapter two gives a brief account of the importance, present situation and obstacles of teaching reading in senior high schools. Chapter three is a literature review. It introduces the theory of schemata and traces its historical development. At the same time, it discusses the relationship between schemata and reading teaching. Chapter four is one of the main parts of the thesis, which deals with the application of the theory to teaching reading. Furthermore, it suggests three models of reading in search of an appropriate model. Chapter five is another key part of the thesis which is the methodology. It's about the strategy, skills and procedures of teaching reading. Chapter six presents an experiment conducted in two classes using different teaching methods. The conclusion is drawn from the experiment that the teaching method that is based on the schemata theory seems better in practice. Chapter seven is the last part of the thesis. It summarizes the study. Meanwhile, it points out the limitations of the study and offers suggestions for further study.
