Reading is one of the most important parts in Senior English teaching, and it's also the most difficult for both teachers and students. It makes many teachers and students confused.In order to improve the teaching of senior English reading and to help the teachers and students to find a scientific way of teaching and learning, I have read a great many books on teaching English reading and psychology. After the study of many reading teaching methods and thinking of my own teaching experience, I got the thought of this Five-step Teaching Method of Reading. The five steps work as follows: first, make sure of the aims and tasks before reading a passage; second, activate schema; third, reading comprehension; forth, expansible reading; fifth, creative reading.This teaching method establishes a teaching mode of English reading in accordance with cognitive psychology and psycholinguistics and schema theory. It bases on the essentials of reading and reading process itself. It is student-centered, during the whole process, the teachers act as instructors to serve the study of the students' learning. It also emphasizes the cultural background knowledge in understanding the passage. The method pays great attention to the students' interest in learning. The five steps are advanced one by one, in each of which, the students have specific task, which is designed for the study of the students. It will develop the students' ability in listening and writing as well as in reading.In order to test the effect of this teaching method and to verify the validity and feasibility, I did an equivalent-group experiment lasting a term and a half. From the statistics of the results, we can draw a conclusion that the five-step teaching method of senior English reading is a success. It can efficiently improve the students' ability and strategy and also increase their interest in reading. At the same time, the students become more skillful in listening, speaking and writing.The paper briefly recommends the teaching principles and strategies used in the teaching process of the five-step teaching method of senior English reading. In the end, I pointed out the problems that need to be unproved and given further studies, for which I am striving.
