This thesis traces the development of American modern graduate education and analyses its main features and problems. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the development of American modern graduate education that includes the phases from 1900 to.1945, from 1945 to the late of the 1960s and from the 1970s to now. The second part studies the features that are the new development relation with industry, interdisciplinary education, a variety of students, funding resources and professional degrees. Based on the previous discussions, the last part discusses the three problems of how to achieve the balance between quality and quantity, teaching and research, basic research and applied research.
