With the development of times, people put higher demands on video service. They want to change the passive watching into active selecting the content and timetable and controlling the display process. Thus a new style of video service, called Video on-Demand (VOD), arises according to these demands.VOD system adopts the B/S (Brower/Server) model, deposits in the Video Server the multimedia resources including video, audio, animation, etc. Users can interactively search and demand the information about video programs in the Video Server through the network. VOD can be applied not only in the wide bandwidth of telecommunication, but also in the CATV and computer network. At present, the Telecommunication and CATV provide VOD with good basic of wide bandwidth. However, it is not easy to achieve the digital TV system which people have longed for a long time. There are many reasons as follow: Firstly, CATV stations cannot afford the equipments required by the large VOD systems and the audience cannot bare paying for programs. Secondly, adopting STB (Set-Top-Box) is not an idea method because of its high price and bad compatibility. In addition, at present, most VOD systems are based on WAN (Wide Area Network), so their designs are very complicated and the proprietary Video Servers are expensive and not fitful for LAN (Local Area Network).Under these circumstances, it is an economical and flexible method to establish Web-based VOD system on LAN. This dissertation mainly describes how to create VOD system on our Department LAN. Based on the specialty and requirements, our Department should provide students with plenty of video resources and should store,manage and display the students' and teachers' CAI courseware. This VOD system facilitate above works to accomplish. Obviously this system is utilitarian. At meanwhile,this dissertation adopts some original methods to solve problems arisingduring the development and function of this system is strong.This dissertation mainly expounds the key technologies in the VOD system and the development process of it. In the first chapter, it addresses the general conception about VOD and makes some comparisons and conclusions. In the second chapter, it puts forward the VOD design model. In the third chapter, it in detail discusses the main problems and how to solve them by key technologies and methods, such as streaming media, data compress standards and methods, QoS, Maximum Client Connections, database management, etc. In the fourth chapter, it elaborates how to establish such a VOD system on the LAN, from these aspects: encode streaming media, configure Video Server configuration, create JSP, develop client player, embed the player in the Web page.This VOD system includes three different types of content: Video on Demand,Courseware on Demand,Music on Demand. It applys large database management system. Users can login to it as common user or administrator. If they login as administrator, they may manage the database. In addition to describing how to build a complete VOD system, this dissertation puts forward some innovations both in the technology and in the design. The innovations are in the following aspects: apply JSP to create the active Web pages; adopt JSP and JDBC as database connection technology; divide the Web Sever and Video Server logically; use both RTSP protocol and HTTP protocol to access the URL the video file. The most important innovation is that I develop a player for client, and at last succeed in embedding the RealPlayer in the Web page. It is very convenient for users to watch the video programs either in embedded player window or in the local RealPlayer window.
