| Distance education is an important research field of present education;its basic features are using computer network and multimedia technologies to realize education activities in digital environment. The video courseware on demand accounts for a big proportion in the present distance asynchronous education,and there also exists many advantages in adopting stream media technology.Above all,this thesis introduces the principle of stream media technology surrounding its major technologies,which are Real Media and Windows Media nowadays. Then based on analyzing the solution of present distance education systems,it discusses the application of stream media technology in asynchronous education,especially video courseware on demand,and provides the configuration of courseware and the synchronous realization during creating it. In the main part of this thesis,it designs a video courseware on demand application system according to current distance education' s status. This system contains three main subsystems. One is management system,a server-side management tool,which is used to manage and maintain video courseware online. Through this management system,users can browse and manage video courseware simultaneously by using its special browser like user interface,and this overcomes the non-synchronous problems exist in today' s managing and browsing video courseware. The second is video courseware browse system,a client-side tool,which is used to browse video courseware. It is a pure browse system that comes from the management system but without the management functions. And the last is creation system,a creation-side tool,which is used to develop videocourseware. In the thesis' s core part,by using Real Media technology,it designs a synchronous and asynchronous video courseware system,and provides developers with a development platform,which highly improves the quality and efficiency in creating video courseware and makes the creation in a pattern way.
