The Research And Exploitation Of The Multimedia CAI System On Maritime English

As a communication tool, English is required to use onboard by IMO(International Maritime Organization) among ports of member countries. The difficulties and misunderstanding in communicating directly threaten the shipboard safe operations. On the other hand, in China, there emerge out the relative surplus of seafarers, which the reason is the lower ability of maritime English. The shipping companies consider the seafarers' ability of communication in Maritime English as basic and important evaluation criteria of employing qualified personnel. Meanwhile, the Maritime English has been becoming the barrier of Chinese seafarers tending forwards the world and restricting the development of our higher navigation education and training. The existing mode of Maritime English teaching has not adapted to the requirements of modern shipping. So it is essential to carry out how to reform and develop the Maritime English teaching method and measures based on the modern educational technology of multimedia CAI, the significance of the CA1 research not only cultivate professional personnel with high quality and high ability of using Maritime English, but also promote the shipboard safe operations and continuously meet the requirements of shipping development.Maritime English has strong practicability and character of communication. The final objective is to strengthen the seafarers' ability of application of Maritime English, especially the ability of communication in oral English. Traditional teaching media exists big deficiency, which could not follow up the dynamic scent of learners' knowledge status and background; could not analyze the learners' mistakes occurred and could not provide a large of feedback of information; is lack of English learning environment and self-practice in listening and speaking so that engendered "dumb" English, Moreover, it causes a waste of teaching resources. But the multimedia CAI has much improved the process of teaching management and efficiency of the teaching. When the learners are studying English through the CAI courseware,the computer can automatically store what and how the students have learnt and organically combine the evaluation of teaching quality with the teaching management so that the teachers could obtain the feedback information, control the teaching progress and improve the teaching effects in time.This article puts forward a modern system and method in teaching Maritime English by using the modernized education technology of multimedia CAI of computer and courseware design & exploitation, and introduces the designing process of the CAI software of Maritime English in details, which including four system of scene-dialog system, dictionary system and testing system, This Maritime English CAI was designed by using the Authorware 4.0 as a main tool on the stage and Access as the database designing tool on backstage. In addition, the courseware applies the software of Animator Pro, 3Dmax, Flash 5.0 and Photoshop 6.0 for dealing with the images and animations. The CAI course-ware fully exerts the advantage of the computer multi-media and organically integrates the sound, pictures, images, language and cartoon so that learner's interestingness is excited in initiative and creative studying through the scene-dialogue, role-play, man-to-computer practice, dictionary and random testing & evaluation system etc.. At same time, it can overcome the learners' psychical barrier of not opening mouth for speaking face to face so that largely promote the learners' ability of communication and application of Maritime EnglishChapter 1 introduces the relations of maritime English education and multimedia CAI, as well as its essentiality and actuality of domestic and abroad studying.
