With the development of globalization and the further reform and opening to the out-side world in our country, chools in many parts of country have launched the experiment of Chinese/English bilingual teaching in recent years which is increasingly drawing people's attention. As a fact of the truth, bilingual teaching has already existed in modern schools and Christian schools in the late Qing dynasty .In those schools they integrated language-and-science teaching .Bilingual instruction from the end of the Qing dynasty to the begin of the Republic has played an important role in the cultivation of bilingual personnel,Sine-Western academic exchanges, and it's the beginning of a new teaching modle to science instruction.With the aid of abundant and full and accurate historical materials, this dissertation conducting a cross disciplinary study on the bilingual teaching in the Late-Qing-Early-ROC Period by making use of the methods of historiography, pedagogy and linguistics. It analyses the practical experiences from 1862 to 1922. It is the time that bilingual instruction from the point of the beginning to developing. Concentrating the variables as context, teachers' quality, students' quality, process and output, four representative schools are chosen and intensively analysesed. Based on the result of analyses, this dissertation attempts to bring forth some academic value in theoretical studies and practical applications to the current experiments of the Chinese/English bilingual instruction .
