With English more and more widely used in social communication, writing, as one of the four basic skills of language teaching and an aspect of communicative competence, has drawn more and more attention in the ELT circles. This thesis tires to expound the significance of English composition teaching at middle school from different standpoints and makes an preliminary investigation into the present situation of composition teaching at senior middle school through questionnaires and interviews conducted among a certain number of teachers and students from 9 middle schools in 4 different districts (i.e. Fuzhou, Xiamen, Putian and Longyan) in Fujian Province. Based on the results of the investigation, the thesis reveals some inadequacies of English composition teaching at middle school, including indifference to composition teaching and ineffective instruction. Then the thesis goes on to make an analysis of the common problems in the teaching of English composition at senior middle and points out the causes that lie behind them. Finally the thesis presents some corresponding solutions in the hope of improving the current practice of composition teaching at middle school, concerning the activation of students' motivation, focus on the process, improvement of materials and curriculum and implementation of teachers' training, and so on.
