The world is progressing. With the rapid economic growth of China, secondary education especially English teaching in middle schools is facing challenges and opportunities. The crux of the matter is the effectiveness of English teaching. However, dominated by Grammar Translation Approach, most middle school English classes are teacher-centered rather than student-centered. Most students are used to listening rather than thinking by themselves what to learn and how to learn. Thus, effective English teaching approaches are in urgent need to meet the requirements of the developing world. Being one of the most practical instructional strategies, Cooperative Learning promotes learners to work cooperatively in groups for a common goal. Group members should depend upon themselves to complete a task. Therefore, to apply Cooperative Learning in middle school English class accords with the requirements of the current curriculum reform in China. What this paper focuses on is student-teacher interaction, student-student interaction and student-parents-teacher interaction in class and out of class as well. It provides a detailed study on the literature review of Cooperative Learning and the current situation of English teaching in middle schools in China. Based on the case study of three cooperative group activities, this paper also recommends some practical strategies to apply Cooperative Learning in middle school English class.
