Nowadays, the application of cooperative learning in English classrooms proves to be a new trend in the reform of English teaching. Cooperative learning plays an important role in improving the teaching efficiency of English. Introducing the cooperative learning into English teaching can not only make students have a positive attitude towards English but also improve students’ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing. At the same time, it fully embodies the spirit of quality education and revolutionize the traditional teaching system. It also complies with the needs of times development, and predicts the future trend of modem teaching system.Based on the theories of cooperative learning and the reality of senior English classrooms, this paper, adapting classroom investigation and questionnaire methods, attained some effective data resources. After analysing these data, the author found that in English cooperative learning in high schools, there are some urgent practical problems, which have seriously affected the ultimate effect of cooperative learning. Aiming at these problems, the author puts forth several strategies. In cooperative learning, teachers should pay attention to their role changes, issues-guidance as well as effectiveness of evaluation. In addition, teachers also have to think highly of cultivating students’sense and skills of cooperation. At the same time, appropriate group division and division of labour are the basis of effective cooperative learning.Cooperative learning teaching mode, a new philosophy of teaching, has being explored and attempted, whose application is the need of implementing the New Curriculum Standard and cultivating students’ability of creative thinking and cooperation It not only requires students to think and get hands-on, but calls for interaction and cooperation between teachers and students. Therefore, we teachers have to constantly update teaching ideas, adapting to change, in order to advance the reform of English courses and achieve the purpose of improving the quality of students.
