This thesis is a tentative probe into the teaching of reading in high schools in China by making use of some up-to-date evidence and theories text linguistics, trying to link theory into practice. It is divided into six chapters: Chapterl raises key research questions and factors to be investigated; Chapter2 reviews some representative theories of reading; Chapters considers the history and current situation of teaching methods in China; Chapter4 and 5 deal with what text linguistics suggests about the teaching of reading; Chapter6 looks at the ways of applying the results of the research to the teaching of reading in high schools in China. Each chapter discusses the data provided by a number of previous surveys of the field and focuses on what such data can tell us about the nature of reading and the teaching of reading, and thus its implications for reading and the teaching of reading. Such a picture should, as it is hoped, help those engaged in the teaching of reading in high schools hi China to see what factors need to be considered if they are to teach reading effectively.
