As a basic language skill, reading is one of the most significant ways to absorb the language materials, enlarge the language knowledge, and it is also a crucial means to acquire language input for the readers. How to analyze texts and improve learners' reading competence has always been given great prominence in English teaching. The development of text analysis theory provides significant contributions to the teaching of reading.Since 1960 s,many linguists realized that text analysis should discuss the function of sentences in texts and focus on the contextual relationship. As the macroscopic structures, text patterns play the significant role in comprehending the texts. From the macroscopic angle, readers regard a text as a whole to be analyzed, understood and summarized. Then readers understand words and sentences after getting the main idea of the text.It is helpful to have a better comprehension of the author's opinion and writing purpose.Hence grasping different text patterns can help students master the whole texts and enhance their reading competence and cultivate good reading habits. However, most current researches on text patterns in China are mostly centered on the theory instead of on the practice.Besides, most empirical researches have been conducted among college students and senior school students, while the students of junior high schools are relatively neglected.Based on the text analysis theory, the author conducted a three-month experiment.80 students in Grade Eight from Dangshan NO.2 Middle School were chosen as the subjects.Questionnaires, tests and an interview are applied in the experiment.Theresearch attempts to provide reliable data for the application of text patterns in English reading teaching. After the experiment, the author analyzed the statistics and obtained three main findings.Firstly, the current situation of English reading teaching is not optimistic. Most students are unaware of the importance of text patterns and have not formed the good reading habits of prediction, inference and summarization etc..Secondly,during the experiment the author designed the teaching model of reading which helps students understand the texts of different genres. The model is the combination of linguistic knowledge and knowledge of text patterns. In reading classes, the teachers should change the traditional way which stresses on the linguistic knowledge. The teachers should combine the explanation of text patters characteristics with language points, then teachers guide students to discuss on the topics of texts in order to enhance students' good reading habits. It proved to be feasible to facilitate students to comprehend passages from different perspectives.Thirdly,by making a contrastive analysis of the two questionnaires, the author noticed that the overall average score of the post-questionnaire is 0.92 higher than that of the pre-questionnaire,which means that the students pay more attention to text patterns and they have cultivated a good habit of making good use of the appropriate reading strategies such as guessing words, making a prediction and giving the summary of the text.Meanwhile,by analyzing the data collected from the pre-test and post-test,it can be found that the average score of the post-test in EC is 4.16 points higher than that of the pre-test,which proves that there is a significant improvement in students' reading efficiency and reading competence by means of applying text patterns to English reading teaching. The significance of this research is that the experiment on the application of text patters in English reading teaching provides some pedagogical implications for junior high schools.More importantly, the research provides students a different perspective to analyze texts by themselves which can improve their language competence.
