Learning English is a complex process of acquaintance. It involves in many factors that interfere and influence the learners. Such factors will undoubtedly play an important role in studiers' making progress. Which factors help the learners to achieve a lot, while which factors become obstacles in studying is a question for most teachers and learners. To students in secondary schools, they will face with the same problems most Chinese learners have in their learning of English. As an English teacher in a secondary school for years, the writer worries about the current affair of the students seemingly all lack of interests in studying English and care nothing about their achievements. Thus, the writer tries to find out whether it is because of lacking of motivation that causes the students lack of interests in their study.The whole paper is divided into four parts-the reason for giving the investigation, the result it discloses, the analysis of the result and the methods the teachers and the learners should take. The paper is based on prevailing researches on motivation for study. A questionnaire was given to students to look into their motivation, study method, energy in study, attitude towards study so on, which helps the writer to find out the main causes and results for the hypothesis that students can' t achieve a lot in their study because they are lacking of motivation. After the survey, the writer puts forward some strategies in helping to provoke the motivation within the students and methods in helping the other English teachers maintain the motivation of the students. At the end of the paper, the writer draws a conclusion that teacher should not only know what to teach to the students, but alsohelps them to learn how to learn by themselves.One shortcoming for this paper is that number of the students who took part in the investigation is not big enough and there are no comparative figures, which probably results in onesideness in the analysis. The writer hopes to do more research on this field thereafter.
