The English syllabus of middle school points out that one important goal of English teaching is to develop students' cross-cultural communication competence. But generally speaking, studies in this field are still on the beginning phase. Some teachers are still not sensitive about it. People hold different opinions on how to cultivate students' cross-cultural communication competence.I made a detailed questionnaire to survey the cross-cultural communication competence of middle school teachers and students, and interviewed some of the teachers. The result shows that the cross-cultural communication competence is generally brushed aside in middle schools. The analysis of the data obtained indicates that the entrance examination for higher education, the teaching materials and methods greatly influences the English teaching. The syllabus emphasizes the importance of the cross-cultural communication competence, but we can find only a small percentage of this in the entrance examination, which examines mainly students' grammar, instead of their cross-cultural communication competence.Based on the investigation and study, this paper comes to the conclusion that the cross-cultural communication competence is very important, without which students will find it hard to meet the social requirements and China's English teaching in middle schools must be reformed. At the end of the paper, several suggestions are made, for instance, reforming the entrance examination, infusing more culture into the teaching materials, training teachers more, improving the teaching conditions and facilitating the corporations between sections of education.
