In the field of education, people pay more attention to the students than teachers at the present. The class is student-centered. The object of teaching is not only to improve students' communicative competence but also to reach the higher level in reading. English should be taught as a skill not as a knowledge. Task- based teaching method has become popular since 1980s, and has been brought in our country. However, the author learnt by investigation that in some teachers' opinion, task -based teaching method is helpful for oral competence of the students and it is of little use for improving students' reading ability; while reading is still important in university entrance exam. So, the teachers should teach reading with traditional method. The purpose of the current paper is to bear testimony to the hypothesis that the task-based teaching method can be used in reading class effectively and it can improve students' learning interest and reading ability. The current thesis tries to get the approval by means of carrying out task-based reading experiments in Nanzhao No.l Senior Middle School, Henan Province, with two contrast groups in Grade One in the year 2003.The results from the experiment shows the experimental class who take task-based reading training make bigger progress in reading ability compared to the comparative class. This shows task-based teaching method is available in reading class. The analysis of the experiment resultsand discussion on the prospect of task-based learning and the limitations state the space that can be improved in the future.
