Political stability is an indispensable political objective that any society pursues in its developing process. In contemporary China, it plays a very important role in keeping the sound development of high education and safeguarding the national political stability. The study on the developing countries' political stability has already formed some theories in the academia of western political science, among which Huntingdon's theory on political stability is the most typical. This thesis, while commenting on the theory of western political stability, primarily probes into Mao Zedong's theory of Correctly Dealing with the Contradictions Among People, Deng Xiaoping's view on political stability and Jiang Zemin's theory about the interaction among reform, development and stability. This thesis analyzes the main factors affecting political stability of higher education in the new century: Such factors as the "occidentalization" that western hostile forces are actively advancing and the strategy of "splitting up" are a threat to higher education institutions. The new change in domestic social structure and social stratum, some social contradictions in the process of reform and development in our country, and the macroscopic adjustment in the national higher education will exert influence on teachers' benefit adjustment and thought. College students' employment and poor college students' problems may be the new factors affecting the stability of colleges and universities. Some other troubling factors are ideological issues ingrained in some of the college teachers, the imperfectness existing in the inner management and logistical services of colleges and universities. The thesis argues that there are some effective aspects that can maintain the institutions' political stability. That is, the present social system makes possible the development of economy and society and it has demonstrated its strong vitality; the development of productivity provides an important basis for achieving political stability of colleges and universities; the leadership of the Communist Party of China can effectively ensure the institutions' political stability; the correct leading thought and culture widely accepted by the whole society and students and teaching and staff are able to unite them together; and the rapid development of higher educational enterprises is an important factor of keeping the stability of colleges and universities. The thesis puts forward the main strategies of preserving the institutions' political stability: sticking to the idea that "the priority is development"; accelerating the development of higher education; taking well preserving the benefits of students and teaching and administrative staff as a crucial task; correctly realizing and dealing with the inner contradictions in colleges and universities under the new circumstances; insisting on democratic management and being centered on the perfection of people; giving full play to the intellectual's enthusiasm and creativity; strengthening the construction of ideology and culture and creating a healthy and progressive campus environment.
