Higher vocational education (HVC) has its special, indispensable features that other kind of education does not possess and they are the lifeline for the survival and healthy development in the now competitive world. They are also the overall representation of academic entity, brands and social fame of higher vocational education.The author of this paper surveys the status quo, features and national policies on higher vocational education, delves into the ideas of school management, educational targets, teaching characteristics in higher vocational education and analyzes some of the problems confronting us in current higher vocational education. This paper takes Lanzhou Petrochemical College of Vocational Education as the basis of study by means of interview and investigation and sums up its features in running the college.It is found in this study that the problems this college is facing are that the staff in general lack operating skills; the percentage of teachers having both a teaching certificate and a technical certificate are relatively low; teaching materials meant for occupational practices are not adequate; practice is completed only inside the workshops on campus and the equipment used for practice are backward; time of students' practice is short and practice courses are not properly organized. Besides, the college emphasizes academic teaching but does not pay enough attention to the teaching of occupational skills. The causes which lead to these problems are also analyzed and tackled in this paper.Finally the author put forward the following countermeasures and suggestions: to adjust properly the staff's range of knowledge, lay emphasis on the education of teachers having both a teaching certificate and a technical certificate, invite experienced technicians as part-time or full-time teachers and enhance the ability of operating skills of staff, enrich the content of teaching material for occupational education, improve the methods of teaching management and encourage teachers to compile more and better books which will benefit the students, ameliorate the structure for teaching practice, change the old ways of school management, find more places for students practice outside the school and build up more laboratories on campus. The author also analyzes the difficulties of the college in setting up more teaching and research bases on campus and gives her idea of how to solve these problems.
