For the purpose of improving the teaching of reading in English, revealing the laws governing reader's development of thinking, solving the problem of spending much more time with a few achievements in senior schools' teaching of reading, we should advocate the approach of four steps to remodel the past mechanical knowledge-based analytical teaching approach. While cultivating the students' linguistic competence, the teachers should also emphasize the importance of teaching them the non-linguistic skills.The paper establishes a teaching mode of English reading comprehension in accordance with Cognitive psychology and systematic science, and sets four steps approach to experiment. This paper discusses the problems students may encounter at the pre-reading stage, reading stage and post-reading stage. It also probes into the question on how to lead the students in applying to their reading through discourse and emphasizes that reading can not be effective without cultural background knowledge which plays a very important role in understanding the context.In order to make a further test about the effect of the teaching method, to verify its rationality, feasibility and substantiality, I did an equivalent-group experiment which lasted a school term and a half. The demonstrating part recounts minutely each procedure of the demonstration of four steps approach and the statistics of the results of the experiment. And I also briefly recommend the teaching principles and strategies four steps approach uses in the analytical part of the operating systems.Its result shows that four steps approach can improve the quality of English teaching and can especially make the average students and above learn English easier than before. The experiment also proved that four steps approach is particularly effectual to improve the students' abilities in understanding English through contexts and develop their abilities in using the language synthetically. Foursteps approach can free the students from the puzzle of examination-education and can also make the students get ideal results in exams. It can make the students leam in class actively and happily. It can make the students do reading more communicatively, critically and creatively. Four steps approach can be used with various forms of reading materials.This paper further discusses four steps approach and its enlightenment to senior English teaching of reading. Finally, I rationally meditate on Four steps approach and enumerate the problem that still need to be improved, and formulates the further studies I am striving for.
