In China, the students management system, in which the political assistants play the role of both organizers and managers at the basic level in the university, has existed for many years. It has been generally agreed that their work is crucial to students' growth. However, very few theoretical and systematic researches on the political assistants' work have been carried out. In the times of knowledge economy, graduates with both advanced knowledge and all-round abilities are in increasing need in the society. With the spread of the concept of education for all-round development and its practice in higher education fields students are urged to develop all-round abilities. In this case, there arises the problem of how the political assistants, who act as the manager of student affairs at the basic level of university, should improve themselves so as to suit the new situation and the requirements of their work. With the guide of the of Marxism-Leninism conbined whit the experience of many years' work practice, the present author, using the research methods of theories on ideological & political education, aims to probe into the university political assistants' proper position, basically required qualities and their quality improvement in the following four sections.Section 1: The university is defined as the primary place to produce highly-qualified personnels for the new times of knowledge economy. Then it goesnaturally to the identification of the political assistants' specific position-theorganizer and manager of student activities at the basic level. Their work exerts direct influence on the student management and furthermore, it produce tremendous effect on the student management and furthermore, it produces tremendous effect on the student cultivation strategy. Therefore, it is the requirement of the time,requirement of the socialist personnel cultivation project and the desire of the political assistants themselves to improve their qualities.Section 2: On the basis of the identification of their proper position in the university in the previous section, this section deals with their responsibilities. They should work with the focus on political & ideological education. They should endeavor to help students get overall development in morality, intelligence, phisque, etc through various methods from different angles. This is no doubt a great challenge for the political assistants, due to which they must be qualified in political ideology, knowledge, ability, psychology and physical condition so as to meet the requirement of the work.Section 3: In this section a general survey of the present situation of the political assistants' staff and their work is includes. There are both advantages and disadvantages of the political assistant system. Therefore, unless greatly improved in quality, they could be obstacles to the student management in the new time.Section 4: Some measures of improving their qualities are suggested in two ways. In the first place, the political assistants themselves should enhance study in their spaire time, especially the study of the ideological & political theories, modern scientific and technological knowledge, basic knowledge of their students' majors, sociology, psychology, some concerning law, ect. At the same time, the university should strengthen management of he political assistants. It should establish and perfect scientific appointment system, system of exchange among political assistants, and stimulating assessment system so as to create good external conditions for the improvement of their qualities in all aspects.
