The thesis aims to articulate and explicate teacher's role's changing in the Englishteaching through the history of linguistics, psychology, and pedagogy, and tries to analyze theshocking while pleasing changes and present the remarkable significance of teacher's role'schanging. Combined with the reality of high vocational English teaching, it also predicatesthe trends for desirable English teacher's roles in the future. Teachers are traditionally regarded as the cornerstones in education, and teacher'sfunction is always overestimated in the process of students' learning. However, with thedevelopment and the improvement of the theory of linguistics, psychology, and consequently,people begin to realize and have a further understanding of the real nature of language, thepossible pattern of human learning, the essence of teaching, and therefore inevitably, greatchanges have taken place in the area of English teaching. The melioration of teacher's rolesmakes English teaching more efficient in helping students' in their own ways of constructinglearning system, which is supposed to be the ultimate goal of the education. Being an important part of our higher education, high vocational education is differentfrom not only general colleges and universities, but also middle school teaching. Its Englishteaching aims and students' specific conditions make it more important for its Englishteachers to reflect their teaching. Therefore, we work out a questionnaire on the roles of highvocational English teacher's role, together with interview and observation, the presentconditions of these teachers' roles and its related factors are investigated and studied here. The main points are as follows. Some high vocational English teachers has somemisunderstanding in teaching ideas; Some teachers professional qualifications, especiallytheir ability on scientific research and reflection are most needed; Vocational schools'conditions and the value system on teachers also restrict teacher's roles. In order to strengthen the construction of high vocational English teacher's team and quicken the changing of teacher's roles to prepare for the overall and effective implement, this thesis puts forward the desirable high vocational English teachers' roles as a guider, partner, adviser, designer, assessor, learner, researcher and reflective practitioner from the relationship between teacher and students, curriculum operation and teacher's self-development. Meanwhile, according to the characteristics of vocational education, high vocational English teachers should be both a teacher and a personnel in a specific field.
