Under the new curriculum standard in which the new educational beliefs of "humanism" and "for students' lifelong development" are advocated, teachers are considered to be the key to the success of the reform (Li, 2003). Proper understanding of a teacher's role will directly ensure the full play of teachers' professional quality so that high-quality teaching can be achieved. "New curriculum is devoted to transferring the way of the student's study as well as the teacher's teaching." (Liu, 2003) It is understood that the transferring of the roles has become the biggest challenge to teachers who are making every effort to adapt to the new roles requested. The new curriculum emphasizes the interaction between teachers and students in class and preaching building up a "study community."Based on the relevant theories of educational psychology, this thesis aims at sharing personal views about proper roles of teachers in the classroom. Thus, the studies about English teachers' self-evaluation of roles in the classroom and the evaluation from students in two Middle Schools in Simao Prefecture at present situation were carried out, with the purpose of discovering some existing problems, from which some enlightenment could be gained. Then, the final goal of the thesis coming to light is, through clarification of the roles of high school English teachers, to propose some feasible suggestions with the hope of improving the classroom teaching and to stimulate some positive changes in students' personalities and emotions by equipping students with the ability of autonomous study. The research has indicated that English teachers in Simao Prefecture have had some awareness of the new curriculum in theory. To our delight, part of their beliefs can be used in their own daily teaching. However, one fact is that it is hard to play teachers' ideal roles in reality under the pressure of test-oriented system, and lacking sufficient theory support is also the main factor.
