Reading is an effective method to master the English language and improve the learner's language competence of English .It is also an approach to learning about the world .For nearly one century many scholars have been making great efforts on the research about the essence of English reading, its psychological process, and its reading patterns and strategies. Great progress has been made in certain fields. In China's senior middle school education, to improve the student's English reading is one of the most important goals in English teaching. Also, reading is an effective way to enhance the student's English competence in an all-round way.In recent years, due to the implementation of new English textbooks, and the strengthening on the training of English teachers, in rural areas, such as Qi Chun County, the senior middle school students, competence of English has been enhanced to a certain degree. But compared with the requirements of the newly-edited curriculum, there is still a long way to go. Taking the reading models and strategies for examples, the students still can not use them skillfully and adequately. Therefore, this paper investigates how the senior middle school students make use of the reading strategies. After that, the author seeks effective reading approaches to improve the students' reading comprehension ability.At first the author states the definition and main features of learning strategies, then reviews the historic background, main contents of learning strategies. For instance, based on the aim of the strategy using, Cohen divides language learner strategies into two categories: language learning strategies, language using strategies. The English reading strategies discussed in this paper is similar to Cohen's language learner strategies and language learning strategies.Then, this paper designs a questionnaire to survey the students' reading status in two non-key senior middle schools in Qi Chun, aiming to get the panorama on...
