Intercultural Communication Approaches To English Teaching In Senior Middle School

It is known that the study on intercultural communication at home and abroad was started very late, so the practical and valuable research on intercultural communication approaches to English teaching in Senior Middle School in China is rather rare. With the instruction and help of the relevant theory, this thesis has divided the relevant cultural knowledge in Senior English for China (SEFC) ~ the present English textbook into two kinds: One is Cultural Knowledge Information; the other is Cultural Communication Information, and then this thesis suggests the following five intercultural communication teaching approaches by connecting the teaching content: First, Strengthening the introduction of Cultural Knowledge Information1.1 Connecting the reading text, the teacher introduces relevant cultural background knowledge, such as history, geography, customs, nation, religion, system, dietetic customs, etc., to make the students know about and understand the culture in the English - speaking countries fully.1.2 Linking biography and literary works helps students to know about knowledge information culture in the West, such as social system, literature, history, value outlook, and so on.1.3 Using relevant and valuable supplementary reading materials help students to learn about the foreign culture and raise the interest. Second, Valuing the Introduction and Practice of Cultural Communication Information2.1 Connecting such language function items as "introduction, greetings and parting", the teacher can tell students how to greet and part from native English speakers appropriately.2.2 Connecting such language function items as "wishes and intentions", the teacher can help students to express themselves in a variety of ways when saying good - bye to each other.2.3 Connecting such language function items as "talking about the weather", the teacher can instruct students how to develop the topics with native English speakers properly.2.4 Connecting such language function items as "orders and requests, suggestions and advice, agreement and disagreement, asking for permission, offers and responses, etc.", the teacher can help students toexpress themselves in a polite and implicit way in order to achieve the desired goal.2.5 Connecting Lesson 10 and 11, Body Language, Unit 3, Book 2 A, the teacher can guide students to realize the specific characteristics of Nonverbal Communication.2.6 Connecting the Listening Text of Lesson 12, Unit 3, Body Language, Book 2 A, the teacher can guide students to realize the importance of intonation.Third, Comparing and contrasting Chinese culture and Western culture Fourth, Teaching with TechnologyFifth, Taking Advantage of Foreign Teachers and National Matriculation English Test (NMET)There is an experiment and a questionnaire to prove the effect of these intercultural communication teaching approaches in this thesis showing that these suggested teaching approaches are valuable and effective. The reasons lie in: One is that through the mentioned approaches, the students not only have got much more cultural knowledge, but also have formed relatively higher intercultural communication competence; the other is that through the mentioned approaches, the students have become more interested and confident in learning English; all these factors help the students to learn a language well and do well in examinations.The aim of this research is to provide English teaching about intercultural communication in Senior Middle School in China with practical and valuable reference so that English teaching in Senior Middle School can be carried forward more effectively.
