Training evaluation has been a difficult issue since the modern training came into being. As training input in organizations becomes larger and larger, the problem of evaluation is more and more serious. On the other hand, people pay more and more attention to the evaluation issue now. The evaluation theory and technology in all aspects of organizations are developed in a high speed. With this background, evaluation for training return on investment becomes a hot topic in training field.In China, however, the research in training ROI theory is very limited. There are only several translation works at present. And there is seldom application case in the practice. But most of the training experts and practitioners in China, at least in Shanghai, are very interested in training ROI evaluation.The goal of this thesis is to build a clear structure of the existing training ROI study status in the west countries through abundant desk research. It begins with several general concepts analysis, and then gets into the training ROI evaluation theory and application step by step. Last but not the least, what we can learn from the training ROI evaluation is the final pupose. The following is the structure of this thesis.Preface: the springing up background and development status of training ROI evaluation; the analysis and definition of basic concepts.Chapter 1: training evaluation theorys and ROI theory's position in the big picture; the transfer from financial ROI to training ROI; 5 study scopes of training ROI evaluation.Chapter 2: take a deeper look into one scope, i. e. training ROI evaluation models. This thesis put emphases on the model built by Jack J. Philips. But all the models all have their own contribution to the training ROI theory.Chapter 3: in the perspectives of applicability, effectiveness and reliability, it analyzes the features and contribution of training ROI evaluation further; based on the abalysis, it tries to get some suggestions to the training evaluation and the whole training function in ChinaChapter 4: it's a summary of some ROI related issues, such as how to use the evaluation result; how to fit the stakeholders' needs; and why ROI is so hot. At the end, there are several philosophy issues about evaluation having been thought by the author all through this research.
