Written form of expression is the presentation of a learner's comprehensive capacities. Being a means of checking and examining the learners' capacity, the National Matriculation English Test paper gives composition 25 points, which occupies one sixth of the whole score. This shows that the experts pay special attention to the learners' writing capacity. The education world is always focusing on the issue of how to improve the students' abilities of expressing themselves by written English. With the development and application of the Communicative Language Teaching Approach in English teaching, the students' abilities of expressing themselves by written English is becoming the absolutely necessary communicating capacity for the English learners. In English Language Teaching in China, the cultivation of the students' composing abilities is always a weakness. The teachers and the students should devote enough time and energy to practising it. Many students, however, found that the composition which they had written with facility and which read fluent and smooth couldn't get a high mark from the teacher after a long time of practising. This kind of phenomenon is called the Plateau Phenomenon. When the learners find that they can't get more progress in practice, we say they have reached the plateau. This thesis discusses how to overcome the Plateau Phenomenon by using effective learning strategies. It is also concerned about the causes of the obstacles and tries to analyze them in the aspects of psychology, pedagogy and learning strategies. The thesis will introduce some English writing solutions and concrete training methods combined with the NMET Grading Criterion.
